Charlie Weis should get another year to coach the Irish

All of this stuff about firing college head football coaches is a little out of hand.  The University of Colorado made the right decision when they kept Dan Hawkins.  Yes, Hawkins has sucked, but it was the right decision financially.

Notre Dame is a completely different school and program, but they should give Charlie Weis another year for a few reasons:

  1. It would be irresponsible to fire him, considering it would cost about $40 million to pay him out and hire a new staff.  To drop that kind of money on a coach is a complete slap in the face to the economy.  You could call this a college football bailout.
  2. If you're on the board of directors of a company, would you fire your CEO when it is obvious that one department needs to be fixed?  No, you go fix that department - and for ND that's the defense.  Charlie is accountable for all departments, but he should get the mandate to fix that department next year or be held accountable.
  3. There is a possibility of a strong nucleus coming back next year.  Yea, people said that coming into this year, but the weakness is even more glaring.

All of this is probably moot as Charlie will probably be fired tomorrow, but I think dropping that kind of money on getting rid (not hiring) football coach is ridiculous.

ARS is a bunch of con-artists

Last week my wife was at Home Depot and there was someone there from offering furnace tune-ups.  This is our second winter in this house, so she decided to drop the $75 and have them come over and check it out.

The "repairman" comes over last week and takes a look at the furnace, comes up from the crawlspace and says "I need to talk to you about your furnace."  That's never something you want to hear.  He goes on to give me the news that there are a few things wrong with it including the inducer motor over-amping and spitting out too much CO2.  He said that it wouldn't be worth fixing it and that we should strongly consider getting a new one.

For the next 24 hours we considered our options on how we would pay for a new $3600 furnace.  Not an easy task when we just forked out $3500 on a new hot water heater.

We finally decided it would be best to get a second opinion.  Good thing we did.  The next guy came over and told us there was absolutely nothing wrong with it and that it wasn't even spitting out any CO2.  He told us that ARS try to rip people off all the time and even go so far as to show people video of faulty equipment from other people's homes.

In case you're wondering, we did look up ARS' ratings and reviews with the Better Business Bureau and they have solid grades, but those are easy to manipulate.  If you have to deal with these clowns, be careful.

Walk at 90 Degree Angle Day

I am officially declaring that next Friday, November 20 is "Walk at 90 Degree Angle Day."  All day you have to walk at right angles.

For those of you that don't know how to do this, here' how it works:

Whenever you are walking and you want to turn, you can only turn left or right at a 90 degree angle,  No 45 degree angles, no 13 degree angles.  Everything must be 90 degrees. All day.

If you want to tweet how you're Walk at 90 Degree Angle Day is going, you can use the hashtag: #walk90

Props to Noodles for fast marketing

I'm a big fan of how Noodles & Company markets. It's dumping snow here in Denver today and they sent out this email to stir up some business. It's super timely and will surely drive some traffic.

But it seems like it's time to stop requiring people to print out coupons. What if I showed this on my iPhone? Would they take it? I doubt because they couldn't track it. Someone needs to find a way to do that.

Ben Folds - Effington (Live in Studio)

This should be the state song of Illinois and I feel like I have a say in that since I grew up in Illinois.
